Biography

Takahiro Shimada is Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Science at Kyoto University in Japan.

Shimada received his B.Eng. degree in Engineering from Kyoto University in Japan in 2004, his M.Eng. degree in Engineering from Kyoto University in 2006, and a Ph.D. degree in Engineering from Kyoto University in 2008. After JSPS Research Fellowship for Young Scientist (DC) in 2008, he joined the faculty at Kyoto University as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Science in 2008. He joined Prof. Christian Elsaesser group at Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM as a Visiting Researcher in 2012. He was promoted to Associate Professor at Kyoto University in 2018 and Professor in 2021. He was entitled as Kyoto University FOREST Principal Investigator in 2023.

Professor Shimada is currently teaching undergraduate course in Mechanics of Materials, Fundamentals of Materials, and Strength and Fracture of Materials, and gradaute course in Advanced Solid Mechanics, Fracture Mechanics, Dynamics of Atomic Systems, and Design of Complex Mechanical Systems.

Professor Shimada’s main research interest is developing multiscale computational models for understanding mechanical behavior and strength of materials and advanced functional properties in ferroelectric, magnetic, and multiferroic materials using a combination of atomistic/first-principles desnity-functional theory calculations and phase-field methods. In particular, he is interested in understanding/designing ultrahigh strength of nanostructured materials and electron-doped/charged materials, multiphysics coupling between mechanical deformation and ferroelectric, magnetic, and multiferroic properties (strain engineering), structural and dynamic properties of topological objects including polar/magnetic skyrmions and merons, and creating/designing “quantum machines” induced by a functionalized lattice defects in insulators or semiconductors. His research group collaborates actively with experimental and computational/theoretical groups as well as with industrial companies.
